Anja joined the School of Health and Social Care and the Centre for Transport & Society in December 2008, after gaining a 3 year EPSRC funded studentship as part of the iConnect (Impact of Constructing Non-motorised Networks and Evaluating Changes in Travel) consortium, which aims to evaluate the Connect2 programme. Connect2 is a £138 million programme of investment in walking and cycling infrastructure at 79 sites across the UK funded by the Big Lottery Fund and implemented by sustainable transport charity, Sustrans. It involves creating new crossings and bridges to overcome barriers such as busy roads, rivers and railways, giving people easier and healthier access to their schools, shops, parks and countryside. It therefore provides a unique opportunity to measure and evaluate the travel, physical activity and carbon impacts of interventions to improve the connectivity of infrastructure for walking and cycling. iConnect is an interdisciplinary consortium of eight institutions with expertise in energy, environmental, physical activity, public health and transport research (including health economics and transport economics) and computerised urban modelling. The main objectives of the iConnect research programme are:
Anja will be focussing on gender issues in UK cycling and on how social influence may encourage increased levels of cycling. Prior to undertaking the PhD, after completing her BSc in Environment and Development at Durham, Anja worked for eight years in communications and marketing for a number of voluntary sector organisations, including four years with Sustrans. She completed her MA in Tourism and Sustainability at UWE in 2006. Her dissertation was entitled 'Welcome to the Cheap Seats: Air Travel and Climate Change' and investigated peoples awareness of the links between tourism travel and global warming. |
