Professional Summary

Charles' background is in psychology and in particular applied social psychology. He has an interest in how attitudes and motivation mediate behaviour and specifically, decision making and level of accepted risk. He is currently involved as principal investigator into a DfT study into public attitudes to road user safety and as co-investigator for a study of business attitudes to transport (DfT), a study into design and policy elements that increase cycling and walking in the South West (for Government Office of the South West), an investigation into rural travel behaviour of older people (NDA ESRC grant) and a project examining the role of the built environment in travel behaviour (EU Renaissance Project). He was the CTS project manager for the recently completed DfT funded project understanding the public attitudes and acceptability of road pricing, which involved a large-scale re-convened qualitative investigation in collaboration with BMRB. He has also completed a study into older people's travel and driving needs and how new technology could prolong safer driving, as part of the SPARC initiative for BBSRC and EPSRC. He has also worked on a project focussing on how carbon calculators may affect travel behaviour, again in collaboration with BMRB for the DfT. Previously Charles worked at Bournemouth University where he completed projects on collaboration and networking between universities, government and NGOs, including developing and carrying out large-scale multi-method evaluations, in the filed of applied psychology and mental health. He completed his PhD at the University of Southampton in June 2004 which involved qualitative and quantitative analysis coupled with on-road trials addressing attitudes towards Advanced Vehicle Driver Assistance Systems and differences between these attitudes based on level of accepted risk. Additionally, he has also been involved in research focussing on attitudes towards car driving, travel choice and engineering and technological safety interventions and the social psychological and sociological determinants of risk perception, acceptance and comprehension in relation to driving behaviour, travel mode choice and acceptance of technological interventions.

Charles has also carried out research applying social psychology to merchant seafaring operations, including a longitudinal study of recruitment, selection and retention of merchant seafarers and an in-depth account of simulation as a method of training for seafarers. Previously Charles has also carried out work addressing attitudes towards mental health including devising and running mental health awareness training for prison staff, involving a project using reflective learning to change prison staff attitudes to mental health, where he was also involved in devising an award winning training video.

He also has a keen interest in collaborations and partnerships between organsiations, government and higher education and has carried out research and extensive evaluation of such ventures. He has specific expertise in applied social research methods, in particular qualitative research, and advocates using a transcendent approach in which the participants and stakeholders are involved thoroughly in the research process, often blurring the boundaries between researcher and the researched and as such is particularly interested in using a variety of (re)presentation methods to create a more beneficial shared research environment.
